A saline breast implant is a sac of silicone elastomer which is surgically implanted under your tissues and then filled with sterile saline through a valve. They are the most frequently used implants in the U.S. If they rupture, the body will absorb the saline like drinking a glass of water. You must be at least 18 years old to get saline filled breast implants. They are used to increase the size and proportion of a woman’s breasts. Saline breast implants are also used for breast reconstruction to restore a woman’s breast shape after a mastectomy or injury that resulted in either partial or total loss of the breast(s) or to correct a birth defect.

There are two types of saline-filled implants. One type is a fixed volume implant, which is filled with the entire volume of saline at implantation. Another type is an adjustable volume implant, which is filled intraoperatively and has the potential for further postoperative adjustment.

Saline breast implants were approved by the FDA in 2000. Saline implants are more likely to cause rippling as compared to silicone and are usually firmer and less natural. They are filled during surgery so the surgeon can make adjustments. If the implant ruptures, it can be removed or replaced.
